In Monterrey, Mexico, a beagle-sized AI-powered robot named “Waldog” is turning heads as it roams the streets, chatting with residents to promote awareness of animal welfare and combat abuse. With its cheerful metallic voice, Waldog approaches both children and adults, sparking conversations about the rights and treatment of animals.

On August 8, in Santa Catarina—a working-class neighborhood of Monterrey—the friendly robot introduced itself to a laughing crowd: “Hello, I’m Waldog. I’m here to speak for those who have no voice—the animals living on the streets.” The message was clear: his mission is to inspire better care for all creatures.

The initiative comes from Federal Senator Waldo Fernández, a local lawmaker and animal advocate who personally invested $4,084 to bring Waldog to life. The robot, which he named after himself, is remotely controlled and requires an adult handler at all times.

According to Fernández, Waldog’s role goes beyond advocacy. It will also help identify trash, report potholes, and keep track of stray dogs across the city. “It’s about fostering compassion and responsibility toward both animals and people,” the senator explained in an Instagram post.

While robot dogs have been deployed internationally for purposes like disaster search-and-rescue and border patrol operations, Waldog’s calendar is focused on community outreach. Planned stops include schools, public squares, and neighborhood events throughout Monterrey’s metropolitan area—along with plenty of selfie opportunities for fans.
