Uganda’s Electoral Commission has officially approved both President Yoweri Museveni and opposition leader Bobi Wine as candidates for the country’s 2026 elections, setting up what could be a defining political clash.

Museveni, now 81, has been in power since 1986 and is among Africa’s longest-serving heads of state. Running again under the ruling National Resistance Movement, he highlights economic growth, infrastructure projects and relative stability as hallmarks of his leadership, pledging renewed attention to wealth creation, education, healthcare and anti-corruption drives.

Yet his critics paint a different picture, accusing him of entrenched authoritarianism. They point to constitutional changes that abolished presidential term and age limits, heavy-handed tactics against opponents, and persistent human rights violations as evidence of democratic backsliding.

Bobi Wine — a 43-year-old musician turned politician who lost to Museveni in the disputed 2021 election — positions himself as the face of generational change. Backed by a youthful electorate frustrated with decades of one-party dominance, he argues that Uganda needs fresh leadership. His candidacy was confirmed on Wednesday in Kampala, where he appeared alongside his wife at the commission’s offices.

With the vote scheduled for January 2026, Ugandans face a stark choice between continuity under Museveni’s long rule and the possibility of a new political direction under Wine — a contest that encapsulates the tension between Uganda’s past and its uncertain future.
