A gunman opened fire on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas early Wednesday, killing one detainee and injuring two others before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to local and federal officials.

Dallas police said officers responded around 6:40 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the federal building. Initial statements from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) incorrectly said two detainees had died; the agency later revised the death toll to one. The other two victims remain in critical condition, one of whom is a Mexican national, Mexico’s foreign ministry confirmed.

Authorities said the attacker, identified by NBC News as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, fired from a neighboring structure at the ICE building, striking a van in a secured entry area where detainees were present. No law enforcement officers were injured.

Federal investigators told reporters that shell casings recovered at the scene were engraved with anti-ICE slogans, including “ANTI ICE.” The FBI said it is treating the incident as an act of “targeted violence” but has not publicly established a motive or any organizational links. Despite political speculation, officials have offered no evidence tying the shooter to groups such as Antifa or confirming a partisan affiliation.

Prominent Republican officials—including former President Donald Trump, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, and Vice President JD Vance—quickly condemned the attack. Several characterized it as politically motivated or blamed left-wing rhetoric, although law enforcement has not substantiated those claims. Trump called the shooting “despicable” and pledged an executive order to dismantle “domestic terrorism networks,” while Abbott said Texas “fully supports ICE” and vowed the incident would not slow immigration enforcement.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson urged residents to remain calm and allow police and federal investigators to complete their work. The FBI, DHS, ICE, and local law enforcement agencies are jointly investigating the shooting.
