Sydney Attack Investigation Focuses on Suspects’ Recent Trip to the Philippines

One Of The Prime Suspect Of The Bondi Beach Attack

Australian authorities are examining the travel history of Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, who are accused of carrying out a deadly attack at a Hanukkah event in Sydney that resulted in 15 deaths and multiple injuries.

According to media reports and official confirmations, the two men travelled from Sydney to the Philippines on 1 November and remained there until 28 November, shortly before the attack. Philippine immigration officials confirmed that both individuals entered the country together, listed Davao City as their destination, and departed on a return journey to Sydney via Manila.

During their stay, the men lodged at a budget hotel in Davao City. Hotel staff said the pair occupied a twin room and largely kept to themselves. Employees reported that they spent most of their time inside the hotel and typically left only briefly, mainly to purchase food. Staff did not observe them meeting visitors or using taxis, and said their behaviour did not draw particular attention at the time.

Following the attack in Sydney, Australian police recovered suspected improvised explosive devices and ISIS-related materials from a vehicle linked to Naveed Akram. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether these materials were functional or intended for use.

Speculation has circulated regarding the purpose of the men’s travel to the Philippines, including suggestions of possible militant training. Philippine military and government officials have rejected these claims, stating there is no evidence that the men were involved in terrorist training activities while in the country.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that investigators are aware of the overseas travel but said the motive and relevance of the trip remain under investigation.

Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police following the attack. Naveed Akram survived and has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one terrorism-related offence. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that conclusions regarding motive or external links have not yet been finalised.
