Amazon Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos has voiced support for eliminating federal income taxes for lower-income Americans, arguing the move would create greater economic opportunity for struggling families.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Bezos reflected on his upbringing as the son of a Cuban immigrant and a teenage mother, describing how his family overcame financial hardship through perseverance and opportunity.

“I want to make sure that the people who are struggling today have a chance to do that too,” Bezos said, adding that easing the tax burden on low-income households could help nurture future innovators and entrepreneurs.

Bezos also argued that higher taxes on wealthy individuals would have limited impact on improving the financial conditions of working families, pushing back against growing calls for expanded taxation on high earners.

His comments come as several U.S. states and local governments explore new tax measures targeting wealthier residents. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently introduced a proposed “pied-à-terre” tax aimed at luxury second homes owned by part-time residents, while multiple states are considering broader wealth tax initiatives.

The debate over taxation and economic inequality has intensified in recent years as policymakers weigh how to address rising living costs and widening wealth gaps across the United States.
