U.S. President Donald Trump’s praise for Liberian President Joseph Boakai’s English sparked confusion and criticism on Thursday in Liberia, where English is the official language. Many interpreted Trump’s remarks as patronizing.
During a White House meeting, Trump expressed surprise at Boakai’s fluency, commenting, “Such good English” and “Such beautiful English.” He then asked Boakai where he had learned to speak so well, continuing the exchange even after Boakai quietly responded. “Where were you educated? Where? In Liberia?” Trump asked.
The encounter took place on Wednesday during a White House meeting with leaders from five West African countries, aligning with a U.S. policy shift from providing aid to focusing on trade.
While Boakai’s administration said it took no offense, some Liberians felt the remarks were demeaning. The White House did not confirm whether Trump was aware that Liberia has used English as its official language since the 1800s.
Massad Boulos, Trump’s senior adviser for Africa, defended the remarks, saying the president intended to compliment Boakai’s language skills and that attendees appreciated Trump’s engagement.
