At least four people were killed and several others wounded in a series of violent attacks involving knives and incendiary devices at two metro stations in Taipei, Taiwanese authorities said.
The incident began on Friday, Dec. 19, at the city’s main metro station, where smoke and petrol bombs were detonated, triggering panic among commuters. The violence later moved to Zhongshan Station, where the assailant continued what police described as an indiscriminate stabbing spree. Among the four fatalities was the attacker himself.

According to the National Police Agency (NPA), nine people sustained injuries, including stab wounds and head trauma. All were taken to hospital for treatment, Premier Cho Jung-tai confirmed.
Authorities said the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Chang Wen, wore a mask and deliberately deployed multiple smoke and petrol bombs before randomly attacking members of the public. Investigators believe the same individual carried out both attacks. Police also reported that Chang had vandalized several vehicles and set fire to his residence prior to the assaults.

“The suspect acted according to a premeditated plan and targeted people indiscriminately,” said Chang Jung-Hsin, director-general of the NPA.
During a police pursuit following the attacks, the suspect died after falling from a height, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said.
In response, police increased security measures across the affected areas, including heightened patrols and a stronger visible presence in public transport hubs. Officials said the motive behind the attacks remains under investigation.
Premier Cho urged law enforcement agencies nationwide to remain on high alert, particularly at major transit stations that could be vulnerable to similar incidents. He also pledged government support for victims’ families, those injured, and civilians who assisted during the emergency, including compensation and follow-up care.
President Lai Ching-te expressed condolences in a social media statement, offering sympathy to the families of those killed and gratitude to medical workers who treated the injured. He also acknowledged members of the public who intervened to prevent further harm.
The president added that prosecutors, police, and investigative agencies have been instructed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the suspect’s background, possible motives, and any potential involvement of accomplices, with the findings to be made public.
