Sections of the Tower of London were temporarily shut after an act of vandalism targeting the display case that holds the Imperial State Crown, one of the most significant pieces in the Crown Jewels collection.

According to police, four individuals were taken into custody after the disturbance, which happened shortly before 10 a.m. on Saturday. Officers said they received reports that food items had been thrown at the protective glass. Two of the suspects allegedly fled immediately afterward.

Video circulating online appears to show one activist pulling a foil tray of crumble from a bag and forcefully smacking it against the case. Another person can be seen tipping a container of bright yellow custard onto the front panel.

Police said in a statement that they worked alongside City of London officers and on-site security staff, leading to four arrests on suspicion of criminal damage. Those detained were taken into custody for questioning. While inquiries were underway, the Tower was closed to visitors.

The Metropolitan Police later clarified that only the Jewel House—the building that displays the Crown Jewels—remained closed while detectives continued their investigation.

The Imperial State Crown, crafted on a gold framework and set with silver mounts, contains nearly 3,000 diamonds along with hundreds of pearls, sapphires, and emeralds. Its purple velvet cap and ermine trim are iconic, and several stones within it—such as the “Stuart Sapphire” and the “Black Prince’s Ruby”—are historically renowned.

Originally created for King George VI in 1937, the crown is still worn during major ceremonial occasions, including the State Opening of Parliament. It is among the most recognisable items in the priceless Crown Jewels collection, which also includes sceptres, orbs, and other regalia.
