OREM, Utah — President Donald Trump announced Friday that a suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has been taken into custody, calling it “a major breakthrough” in the two-day manhunt.
Federal and state officials have not yet confirmed the arrest or released the suspect’s name or motive. Kirk, 30, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot once while speaking at a campus event Wednesday in what Utah’s governor called a “targeted political attack.”

Police say the gunman fired from a rooftop with a high-powered rifle and fled into nearby woods, sparking a nationwide tip-line flood. Authorities plan a news briefing later Friday. Trump said he intends to award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom and attend his funeral.
