Spanish authorities have confirmed the death of 20-year-old American student James “Jimmy” Gracey, who went missing earlier this week during a visit to Barcelona.

Gracey, originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, was last seen late Tuesday night at Shoko, a beachfront nightclub he had attended with friends studying abroad. According to officials from the Catalan Police, a body was discovered near the venue on Thursday and was later identified as Gracey. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the cause of death.

Reports indicate that a team of divers recovered the body from coastal waters near the nightclub. The search had intensified after personal belongings believed to belong to Gracey were found. Local media stated that his wallet was discovered floating in the sea, prompting investigators to focus efforts offshore. However, underwater operations were reportedly complicated by poor visibility conditions.

Gracey had initially been reported missing by his mother, Therese Marren Gracey, who sought assistance through online community groups in Barcelona. She noted that although authorities had located his phone, he had not returned to his accommodation following the night out.

In a public statement issued prior to the discovery, the family described Gracey as dependable and attentive, emphasizing that his lack of communication was unusual and concerning. They had also appealed for information from anyone who may have encountered him.

Authorities have indicated that Gracey’s phone was recovered during an unrelated police action involving another individual, though it remains unclear whether that person is connected to the case. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
