Mali Faces Coordinated Attacks on Multiple Military Sites

Mali’s military reported a series of coordinated assaults on army positions across seven towns in the country’s central and western regions early Tuesday.

The official statement from the armed forces did not disclose specific details about the incidents or identify the perpetrators.

No group has taken responsibility so far, but the attacks appear consistent with tactics used by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al Qaeda-affiliated militant group that has carried out similar operations in recent weeks.

Mali, under military rule since a 2020 coup, has struggled for over ten years against Islamist insurgents linked to both al Qaeda and Islamic State, alongside enduring conflicts with Tuareg rebels in the northern region.

Tuesday’s attacks occurred in Diboli, near the Senegalese border, and nearby towns Kayes and Sandere. Additional strikes took place in Nioro du Sahel and Gogoui, close to Mauritania’s border, and in Molodo and Niono in central Mali, according to the army’s statement.

The military has not yet provided further comments on the situation.
