At least three people have been confirmed dead following a powerful explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training center, authorities reported.
The incident took place around 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Biscailuz Center Academy in East Los Angeles. Officials are currently investigating the cause of the blast, including whether it might have been the result of a training accident.
Aerial footage from KABC-TV showed extensive damage in a parking area filled with patrol cars and box trucks. The exact source of the explosion remains unclear, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Sheriff Robert Luna revealed that the victims were experienced members of the department’s arson and explosives unit, with 19, 22, and 33 years of service respectively. “These individuals were among our most skilled and dedicated,” Luna said. “Tragically, we lost three of them today.” He noted that this marks the deadliest single incident for the department since 1857, when four deputies were killed in a shooting. The names of the deceased are being withheld until all family members have been notified.
Attorney General Pam Bondi addressed the tragedy on social media, stating she had spoken with U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada and described the event as a “horrific incident.” She confirmed that federal agents are on site and actively gathering evidence.
Congressman Jimmy Sanchez also extended his condolences, offering thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families and the wider law enforcement community.
Sources told NBC News that two explosive devices had been brought to the facility the night before. One of the devices exploded Friday morning, killing the three deputies and injuring a sergeant. Investigators are now working to determine why the devices were transported and whether proper safety protocols, such as storing them in blast-proof containers, were followed.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have both dispatched agents to assist with the investigation. Local agencies, including the LAPD’s bomb squad and the LA Fire Department’s arson team, are also involved.
Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed and his Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with the sheriff’s department, offering full support as the situation continues to develop.
