A Texas jury has convicted 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony of murder in the fatal stabbing of fellow teenager Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet, sentencing him to 35 years in prison after concluding that the killing was not justified by self-defense.
The verdict marks the culmination of a closely watched case stemming from a violent confrontation at a Frisco school district track and field event in April 2025. Metcalf, 17, died after being stabbed during an argument that unfolded beneath a team tent at the stadium.
Jurors deliberated for several hours before finding Anthony guilty of murder. They later returned with a 35-year prison sentence, rejecting defense arguments that the teenager acted under extreme emotional distress and in fear for his safety. The panel also declined to reduce the charge to manslaughter, which would have carried a significantly lighter punishment.
The courtroom grew emotional after the verdict as members of Metcalf’s family delivered victim impact statements. His parents and twin brother spoke directly to Anthony, describing the lasting devastation caused by the loss of a son and sibling whose life ended abruptly during what should have been a routine school sporting event.
Prosecutors maintained throughout the trial that Anthony’s actions constituted an unjustified act of violence. They argued that the defendant escalated a verbal dispute and responded to a physical shove with deadly force. During closing arguments, the prosecution contended that Anthony had opportunities to leave the situation but instead chose to remain and ultimately resorted to using a knife.
Defense attorneys presented a sharply different account, claiming Anthony sought shelter from rainy weather under another school’s tent and became involved in a confrontation after being repeatedly told to leave. According to the defense, Metcalf pushed Anthony, who then reacted out of fear and confusion, believing he needed to protect himself.
Testimony from students who witnessed the altercation painted varying pictures of the physical encounter. Some described the contact as a forceful two-handed shove, while others characterized it as a minor push. Witnesses also recounted hearing warnings and heated exchanges in the minutes leading up to the stabbing.
Surveillance footage shown during the trial captured portions of the confrontation but did not record the actual stabbing. Jurors instead relied heavily on eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence presented over four days of testimony.
Evidence showed that after the incident, Anthony left the area while coaches and medical personnel rushed to aid Metcalf. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures at the scene before the teenager was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Medical testimony established that the knife wound penetrated Metcalf’s chest and fatally damaged his heart. Investigators recovered a pocket knife from the stadium bleachers, which authorities identified as the weapon used in the attack.
Anthony did not testify during either the trial or sentencing phase. His mother addressed the court during the punishment proceedings, urging jurors to show leniency and expressing remorse on behalf of her son.
Because of the intense public attention surrounding the case, the court imposed restrictions on public statements and prohibited electronic devices inside the courtroom throughout the proceedings.
Following the sentencing, Frisco Independent School District acknowledged the verdict and called for continued compassion and support within the community, recognizing the profound grief and emotions generated by the tragedy.
The case has drawn national attention and reignited debate over youth violence, self-defense claims, and safety at school-sponsored events, while leaving two families to grapple with the consequences of a confrontation that ended in irreversible loss.
