Michelle Obama delivered an emotional tribute to her husband, former U.S. President Barack Obama, during the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Thursday, offering a heartfelt reflection on their decades-long partnership that visibly moved him to tears.
Recalling a promise Barack made early in their relationship, Michelle said he once admitted he could not guarantee her the world but could promise an interesting life. Smiling, she added that he had ultimately given her both, drawing applause from the audience and an emotional response from the former president.
The couple’s relationship began long before the White House. They first met in 1989 while working at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where Michelle Robinson was assigned to mentor Barack Obama during his summer internship while he was studying at Harvard Law School. Although she initially declined his attempts to date her because of their professional relationship, she eventually agreed.
Their first date included a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago, ice cream at a nearby Baskin-Robbins, a walk through the city, and a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. Two years later, Barack proposed at a Chicago restaurant shortly after passing the bar examination. They married on October 3, 1992, celebrated their reception at the South Shore Cultural Center, and later honeymooned along California’s coastline.
The Obamas welcomed their first daughter, Malia, in 1998 and their second daughter, Sasha, in 2001, building a family while balancing demanding professional and public lives.
Throughout Barack Obama’s political journey, Michelle played a pivotal role behind the scenes.
