An oil tanker sustained damage after being struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman on Saturday, raising fresh concerns about maritime security in a strategically important shipping route. The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to a maritime safety authority, the vessel was hit approximately 12.5 miles northeast of Lima, Oman. The impact damaged the tanker’s engine room, leaving the vessel without propulsion. Authorities said no crew members were injured, and the tanker remained afloat following the incident.
In an official advisory, the maritime authority reported that the ship’s Company Security Officer informed it that an unknown projectile had struck the vessel, resulting in engine room damage. Regional coast guard authorities were notified and responded to the situation.
Officials stated that there were no casualties or signs of environmental pollution resulting from the incident. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack. According to the data, only five vessels crossed the passage during the reporting period, representing a 77 percent decrease from the previous day. The movements were conducted through Iran’s unilateral transit arrangement, reflecting reduced operational confidence and limited routing options for commercial shipping.
